Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 2013 Heavily Peated Islay Barley Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 2013 Heavily Peated Islay Barley Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a bold expression from Bruichladdich Distillery, crafted to showcase the island’s terroir with a powerful smoky edge. Distilled in 2013 from 100% Islay-grown barley, this whisky represents the distillery’s commitment to provenance, transparency, and sustainability while embracing the heavily peated style for which Islay is famous.

Peated to 40 PPM (phenol parts per million), Port Charlotte 2013 balances smoky intensity with the natural sweetness and complexity of Islay barley. Matured on the island in a combination of first-fill American whiskey casks and second-fill wine casks, it gains depth, richness, and maritime character.

In the glass, it shows a golden-amber hue. The nose opens with waves of bonfire smoke, sea spray, and toasted oak, layered with lemon zest, malt sweetness, and hints of vanilla and honey. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, delivering flavors of peat smoke, brine, roasted malt, dark chocolate, and dried fruit, lifted by bright citrus and spice. The finish is long, warming, and complex, leaving behind a lingering interplay of sweet malt, smoke, and coastal minerality.

Best enjoyed neat or with a splash of water to reveal its layers, Port Charlotte 2013 also pairs beautifully with smoked meats, strong cheeses, or dark chocolate desserts. It stands as a powerful yet elegant example of how Bruichladdich balances intensity and finesse in the heavily peated Islay style.

Tasting Notes

Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 2013 Heavily Peated Islay Barley Single Malt Scotch Whisky is bold and complex, showcasing the intensity of Islay peat balanced by barley sweetness. The nose opens with powerful peat smoke, charred oak, and sea spray, layered with citrus peel, vanilla, and a hint of honey. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, delivering flavors of roasted malt, smoked meat, and earthy peat intertwined with sweet caramel, dried fruit, and a touch of spice. The texture is robust and oily, carrying the weight of heavy peat while remaining balanced by the malt’s natural sweetness. The finish is long and smoky, leaving lingering notes of sea salt, ash, and sweet oak.

Food Pairings

This heavily peated single malt pairs wonderfully with strong, flavorful dishes. As a starter, smoked oysters or charcuterie with cured meats highlight its smoky depth. For the main course, grilled lamb chops, barbecued ribs, or venison stew emphasize its bold character. Strong cheeses such as Roquefort or mature cheddar create a striking contrast, while desserts like dark chocolate mousse, espresso brownies, or smoked sea salt caramel tart echo its rich, smoky-sweet finish.

Bruichladdich Distillery

Bruichladdich is a progressive distillery on the island of Islay, Scotland, founded in 1881 and revived in 2001 with a philosophy centered on authenticity, terroir, and innovation. Unlike many Islay whiskies known for heavy peat, Bruichladdich often focuses on unpeated or lightly peated styles, showcasing the natural character of Scottish barley and the influence of Islay’s coastal environment. The Classic Laddie is the distillery’s flagship unpeated single malt, crafted from 100% Scottish barley and matured in American oak casks. Bruichladdich emphasizes transparency, listing detailed information about each batch, and is celebrated for its artisanal approach, commitment to sustainability, and dedication to producing whiskies that reflect both tradition and a modern vision of Scotch.
