Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 2013 Heavily Peated Islay Barley Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a bold expression from Bruichladdich Distillery, crafted to showcase the island’s terroir with a powerful smoky edge. Distilled in 2013 from 100% Islay-grown barley, this whisky represents the distillery’s commitment to provenance, transparency, and sustainability while embracing the heavily peated style for which Islay is famous.
Peated to 40 PPM (phenol parts per million), Port Charlotte 2013 balances smoky intensity with the natural sweetness and complexity of Islay barley. Matured on the island in a combination of first-fill American whiskey casks and second-fill wine casks, it gains depth, richness, and maritime character.
In the glass, it shows a golden-amber hue. The nose opens with waves of bonfire smoke, sea spray, and toasted oak, layered with lemon zest, malt sweetness, and hints of vanilla and honey. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, delivering flavors of peat smoke, brine, roasted malt, dark chocolate, and dried fruit, lifted by bright citrus and spice. The finish is long, warming, and complex, leaving behind a lingering interplay of sweet malt, smoke, and coastal minerality.
Best enjoyed neat or with a splash of water to reveal its layers, Port Charlotte 2013 also pairs beautifully with smoked meats, strong cheeses, or dark chocolate desserts. It stands as a powerful yet elegant example of how Bruichladdich balances intensity and finesse in the heavily peated Islay style.
