David Nicholson 1843 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a heritage expression with roots dating back to the mid-19th century in St. Louis, Missouri, where grocer David Nicholson first crafted his bourbon recipe in 1843. Today, the legacy is carried forward in Kentucky, where the whiskey is distilled and aged according to the strict standards of straight bourbon.

Made with a traditional wheated mash bill, this bourbon substitutes wheat in place of rye as the secondary grain, giving it a softer foundation while maintaining the robust character of Kentucky corn. The spirit is distilled in copper stills and laid to rest in new, charred American oak barrels, where it develops structure and complexity over time.

Produced under the Lux Row Distillers portfolio in Bardstown, Kentucky, David Nicholson 1843 is bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV), staying true to its original strength and honoring the authenticity of its historic recipe. Each bottle represents a continuation of nearly two centuries of American bourbon tradition.

Taste Notes & Food Pairings

Tasting Notes

David Nicholson 1843 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey greets the nose with rich aromas of caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak, underscored by hints of baking spice and honey. On the palate, it delivers a full-bodied and bold character, with flavors of butterscotch, corn sweetness, cinnamon, and nutmeg balanced by charred oak. The higher proof gives it intensity while still maintaining smoothness. The finish is long and warming, with lingering notes of spice, toffee, and a touch of peppery heat.

Food Pairings

This bourbon pairs exceptionally well with hearty, savory dishes such as grilled ribeye, smoked brisket, or roasted duck, where its bold spice complements rich meats. It also enhances charcuterie boards with aged cheddar, gouda, or spiced cured meats. For dessert, try it alongside pecan pie, bread pudding, or dark chocolate truffles, where its caramel and vanilla tones mirror the sweetness and depth of the dish.

David Nicholson

David Nicholson 1843 is built on a legacy that dates back to 1843, when a St. Louis grocer named David Nicholson devised a bourbon recipe in the back room of his shop. Over time, the brand evolved from a local specialty to a bourbon respected for its character and heritage.

Through various hands, including the Van Winkle family, the brand carried on its tradition—its signature “43” recipe and reputation for smoothness survived shifting ownership and changing trends. Today, under new stewardship, David Nicholson 1843 is positioned as an approachable, flavor-driven straight bourbon bottled at 100 proof, meant to honor its roots while engaging today’s bourbon drinker.

It blends respect for heritage with clarity and boldness: the brand evokes craftsmanship, continuity, and a simply solid bourbon experience—no gimmicks, just a whiskey bearing a storied name with integrity.
