
Early Times Kentucky Whisky is one of America’s oldest continuously produced whiskey brands, first established in 1860 by Jack Beam, a member of the legendary Beam family. Its name was chosen to honor the “early times” methods of whiskey-making, when spirits were crafted with hands-on care in small pot stills. Over the decades, Early Times built a reputation for being approachable, consistent, and rooted in Kentucky tradition.
Although it was originally bottled as a straight bourbon, changes in production during the 1980s—most notably the use of some whiskey aged in used barrels—meant it no longer met the legal definition of bourbon in the United States. It is now labeled “Kentucky Whisky,” though in international markets it is often still sold as bourbon. Bottled at 40% ABV, it carries a mellow style that appeals to a broad audience, balancing sweetness, light oak, and gentle spice.
On the nose, Early Times shows vanilla, caramel, and corn sweetness with a touch of oak. The palate is soft and smooth, featuring honey, toffee, and light baking spice over a medium body. The finish is clean and lightly warming, with lingering sweetness and subtle oak.
Early Times is not positioned as a premium collector’s whiskey but as a dependable, everyday pour with deep heritage. It has long been valued for its role in cocktails and highballs, while still being easy enough to sip neat. Its survival through Prohibition, thanks to a medicinal license, only adds to its historical importance, making it a true legacy brand in the story of Kentucky whiskey.
