Unlike standard bourbons which are batched from many barrels, each bottle of Russells Reserve Single Barrel comes from a single, hand-picked barrel, meaning its specific flavor profile will vary subtly from one bottle to the next. The bourbon is made from Wild Turkeys proprietary high-rye mash bill, consisting of corn, rye, and malted barley, fermented with a unique yeast strain passed down through generations. It is distilled at a lower proof than many industry standards, contributing to a fuller, richer flavor. The spirit is then filled into new, heavily charred American oak barrels (char #4, often referred to as an "alligator char," indicating the deepest level of char) at a relatively low barrel entry proof, which allows for more interaction between the spirit and the wood during aging. The barrels are aged for approximately 8-10 years, often longer, in various positions within Wild Turkeys iconic "rickhouses" (aging warehouses) in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, which experience significant temperature fluctuations that influence maturation.
